[TM] Trick or Treat

No one in the world could make a slutty Halloween costume like Brooke Davis.

She had decided on a little Watchmen/Batman 'crossover action' when Matthew had pointed out that his dad couldn't be anyone other than Bruce Wayne. And Dean, being Dean, had only suggested that she dress up as Catwoman a couple thousand times before she realized that she needed to own it or do better.

Making her own version of Silk Spectre's costume from the movie was Brooke's way of topping Catwoman. The costume had color to it, and it wasn't an accident that it hugged her curves in all of the right ways. She'd made it less revealing to keep it appropriate for trick or treating with kids, but if Dean didn't like it, that meant he was gay.

He was a lot of things, but gay was one thing that Brooke would have bet money that he wasn't. And if she needed to prove that to a few men who she knew and often loved, she would be happy to point out that he'd requested the Bale version of Batman, not West, Keaton, Clooney, or worst of all, Kilmer.

If he didn't chicken out, they'd make a hot pair walking down the block in their costumes. And their little boy was only going to be the best Iron Man ever, because she'd gotten Dean to help with the light in the center of his costume so that he had a realistic arc reactor. They couldn't do these things halfway. They had friends to compete with and a PTA to piss off.

When bitchy soccer moms complained that they looked 'too violent' as their sons ran around in torn clothing carrying fake chainsaws, that just meant that they were jealous.

Brooke couldn't blame them at all.

OOC: Set in the past. Kthx.

Brooke doesn't say anything to Dean about staying. He's a guy she's known for a little more than seventy-two hours who was just passing through Tree Hill after a job. Private security; the family business that his little brother walked away from. She doesn't know much about him beyond that, though she can't help but get the feeling that she isn't supposed to ask. He looks better without his clothes on, and he's absolutely a giver, but the casual conversation that comes before the giving and getting doesn't tell her much.

She learned everything that she knows about him by taking in the way he reacts to her. He looks down when he talks about his family, writes it off with a joke or a smart ass comment and moves on. He listens when she talks about her skanky, boyfriend-stealing former best friend, and slides his hand down her arm in a way that is a lot more supportive than sexual. He smiles when she sits on his lap.

If Rachel wasn't on some stupid trip, she'd be giving her hell for caring. She doesn't want a boyfriend anymore than she thinks Dean wants to be one. He's not the type of guy who goes around looking for something like that, so it wasn't something she dared to consider. What she has in mind is a little more simple; a friend. She wants to tell him to call her or write to her, maybe send her a postcard sometime from one of the other small towns he passes through.

Dean doesn't have anyone to send a postcard to, and Brooke thinks he should. She doesn't care if she's just another notch in the bedpost for him, because he's another notch in hers. They both play the same games looking for the same things. They should stick together, or at least stay in contact with each other. He should have someone to talk to other than his dad.

She never tells him any of this.

Maybe Dean doesn't want the obligation. Maybe he likes being on his own, living his life however he wants. Maybe a new town and a new girl every week is like getting a fresh start on every job. Maybe they don't have as much in common as she thinks they do. And if she wasn't still getting over Nick, Lucas, and the whole Peyton thing, Brooke would probably risk hearing that on the chance that the offer would mean something to him. But she is, and this is the natural order of things.

People always leave.

Dean can do it by choice, with no strings attached, exactly the way she'd initially wanted. They both have so many complicated things going on in their lives that they should keep this as easy as they both were the other night. She tells herself that over and over, because she doesn't believe it the first fifty times she thinks it. When it is time to say goodbye, 'I'll miss you' has to serve as the stand in for all of the things that she doesn't say.

'Call me' would be asking for too much.

What's that smell?

  • Sep. 3rd, 2009 at 11:20 PM
--cute: is that so?
It's smoke.

With Dean around, she's getting used to it. He sets all kinds of things on fire and pretends it's for a reason. Matthew got to watch special 'back to school' fireworks at Dean's insistence, and nearly the entire Tree Hill Fire Department ended up in her backyard. He tests his flamethrowers once a week to 'make sure they're ready' when he needs them. He likes homemade smores that he, Sam, and Matthew make together in the backward.

So when the smoke detector goes off, and Brooke catches a whiff of smoke from the office, she only needs to shout one word for an explanation. "Dean!"

He doesn't respond immediately so she rushes downstairs, trying to figure out where Matthew is, if Dean needs the fire department to help him put it out again, and what the hell he did this time to make the smoke detector scream louder than she can. She's not worried about the damage, or the danger. If there was any, he would already have everyone out of the house. The thought she's focused on at the moment is simple; he's not getting any sex out of her until he gets rid of the grill and turns the flamethrowers over to Sam.

"Wasn't me," Dean tells her quickly as she enters the kitchen, staring at the big black rock in the sink. It was something edible before Dean and Sam got hold of it. "Sammy here was heating up some pie," he says proudly, clapping his brother on the shoulder. She's mildly offended by how smug he is that this isn't his fault. "Don't be too hard on him, Hot Ass," he adds, but the look on his face says he wants to see someone else in the dog house for a change.

She decides, as soon as she catches the two of them exchange glances, that she's not giving Dean the satisfaction. Sam is already mumbling an apology and promising to clean up everything, and Dean has gotten enough enjoyment out of this already. "I'm going to take a shower. I was going to invite you Boytoy, but you're right. I shouldn't be hard on Sam. Help him clean up and maybe I'll let you be hard on me later."

She doesn't catch the face Sam makes, or hear Dean swear until his breath. She's too busy walking out, away from the smoke and the frustrating boyfriend. He deserves this, because he'll never learn.

And because she misses being able to light a candle in the house and not having to watch him put it out between his fingers.

Your Passion is Yellow
You're a total sexual shape shifter.
You possess a complex sex drive and are very adaptable.
Of all the colors, you are the most likely to be bisexual.
While you the most passionate, you are also very open minded.

OOC: Rachel is [info]lookslikeaslut. Beware of spoilers for the Supernatural S4 finale. The Dean mentioned is [info]dude_imbatman.

"Rachel..." she starts, trying to find some way to tell her sometimes-friend that she isn't buying into the act. It's not that she doesn't want to, because in spite of what Rachel did, she'd love to believe that she's better now. "I know you're clean." Dean had taken it upon himself to call her rehab facility posing as 'Dr. Hagar' to make sure she had completed a program. He'd gotten an earful about it from her, but she was also grateful to have that confirmed. "And I know you have more money than you know what to do with, or you wouldn't be giving this back to me."

Rachel nods, sliding off of the counter and walking over to the refrigerator to pull out a carton of Rocky Road. "So what's the problem? I thought you'd be happy." She takes two spoons out of the drawer, handing one to Brooke. "You were the one who told me I could do this, Brooke. I owe you a lot more than the money I picked up on my way out the door."

"Yeah, and I really appreciated you asking before you took that," she sighs, setting her spoon down on the counter. "If you needed money, I would have given it to you." That was only partially a lie - she would have given it to her if she had been sure it wasn't going to be spent on drugs. "I did believe in you. And it's not that I don't now, but you moving back here without any warning just...it makes me wonder if there's something else that you're trying to get away from."

She can see the moment when Rachel's guard goes up. She recognizes it by the way Rachel leans back away from the counter, and sticks her spoon straight up in the ice cream. "I wanted a fresh start, preferably near a friend who I thought I could make peace with. If that means I'm running from my past, then I guess I'm guilty. I ran back to Tree Hill because the real world was too much for me. And if you're going to pass judgment on me for that, do it. At least I'm not hurting myself anymore."

"I'm not judging you. I'm wondering why, for a girl who kicked a drug habit, you still seem so scared." Brooke knew she had hit a nerve the moment that Rachel stopped making eye contact with her. "I want you to tell me the truth, whatever it is. I guarantee you I've seen worse." Unless Rachel could top the current state of apocalypse, and Brooke doubted that she could.

"I can guarantee that too, because there's nothing I'm hiding from." She picks up the cartoon and dumps it into the trash, throwing the spoon in the sink. "Dammit! I wanted to come home, alright? I wanted to pay you back, and I wanted to go to the only place that ever even remotely felt like I belonged there. So I'm sorry if I didn't bring enough drama for you this time. You don't have to fix me. Everything's fine."

Brooke reaches out, taking hold of her arm. "Alright." She pulls her friend into a hug, and is surprised when Rachel gives in and returns it quickly. "I'm sorry." She lets Rachel believe the apology is for what she said.

It isn't. She apologized because now she's even more convinced that Rachel is in trouble. And if she's supportive enough, sooner or later, she's going to figure out what's going on.

1) Post ten pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.

2) NO CAPTIONS!!! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.

3) They must ALREADY be on your hard drive - no googling or flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.

4) You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.Image heavy. )

Brooke woke up feeling like the whole world had changed. She knew what it felt like to belong in their house, and what it had felt like before, when everything had been new. It had taken her a while to get used to living in Lawrence, because Lawrence was not Tree Hill. For the first few months, she hadn't felt like it was her home. They'd finally gotten past all of that, started using phrases like 'our home' and 'our future'. Dean never gave in easy, but lately, he had been coming around.

And now she was worried about Julian. She wanted to hold Sawyer again and see her friends. The life that she had built with Dean confused her, because at the moment she didn't know if they had built anything at all. Everything that they had been working towards felt like a dream. Reality was back in Tree Hill, and all of this felt like some kind of trick. She knew exactly when her memories cut off from two sets and into one. It wasn't right, and she couldn't make much sense out of it. She wanted to move, but she didn't know where to go.

The problem with home being an 'our' was that she had nowhere to run when something happened.

"Dean," she started quietly, staring at him sleeping beside her. He'd had his arm around her and she'd slipped out of that hold. He grumbled and she poked him in the shoulder, trying to get his attention and wishing they'd actually slept in clothes. "Dean!" This was more than a little important. He needed to get his ass up, now.

The mostly honest meme.

Leave a comment and I will come up with your muse's and my muse's kid. I'm equal opportunity -- adoption counts just as much as organically produced babies. Of course, this is just for fun's sake only, so none of these kids are actually binding to anything. If your muse is in a verse with mine, feel free to request a kid from that verse if you wish!

Basically? Comment here and I'll tell you my opinion on what a kid would be like with Brooke for a mother and your character as the other parent.

Brooke had started getting ready to go see Lucas the second she heard about what happened. She knew, obviously, that being on good best friend duty was supposed to mean that she would run over to Peyton's and hold her while she cried, but she couldn't. Peyton had a shoulder to cry on if she needed one--a shoulder that should have kept his shirt on and they both knew it. She wasn't going to pretend otherwise tonight.

It was easy to forget the way things were before Dean showed up now that they were together, but when it was important, Brooke knew how much she owed Lucas. There were some things he had done for her that she could never repay. He'd been an amazing friend when she had needed one most. She loved him, and she wanted to be there for him. This wasn't obligation or trying to do her job as a friend. She was going to support him because she couldn't imagine doing anything else.

And maybe she needed to apologize for threatening to break his nose.

She left Dean with Matthew and headed over to the Scott house dressed in a huge plaid, flannel shirt and a pair of jeans. It was late: too late for her to worry that Dean was influencing her in any negative way. Besides, she didn't think Lucas would notice. Parking her car in the driveway, she got out and walked up to the door. Instead of trying the door, she knocked - because that was what you were supposed to do in Tree Hill. Otherwise, who knew what the hell you might see.

[TM Application] The End

[Set in Season Five. Book quotes are from Goodnight Moon.]

"Good night comb, good night brush. Good night nobody, good night mush. And good night to the old lady whispering 'hush'," she says softly, watching Angie's tiny fingers curl around the corner of the page. Brooke knows that she is too little to make sense of the words, but Angie reacts to the colors, her eyes widening at the greens and yellows in the book. She lets her stare at each page for a while, keeping in mind that it's a lot for a baby to take in.

It's well past the little girl's bedtime, but Brooke isn't worried. She is calm and quiet, and that is all that she can ever ask for. They're getting used to each other. It isn't always easy, but she's not alone. Lucas taught her how to relax. She knows that Angie picks up on it when she panics, so she isn't going to. There's no reason for her to worry when such a beautiful child is with her. They're going to be okay.

Brooke leans down to place a kiss on Angie's forehead, and she reacts with a big yawn. "Good night stars, good night air," she continues, watching Angie's eyelids flutter as she tries to resist falling asleep. "Don't fight it, Angie," she laughs. It's adorable, she can't help herself.

She lifts the book a little, letting Angie look at it until her eyes finally close. "Good night noises every where," she whispers, finishing the story as an excuse to hold on to her for a little while longer.

"The end." Brooke closes the book with one hand and sets it down on the table beside her, not moving from her place in the rocking chair. She lets Angie sleep, watching her for a few minutes before she carefully moves her to her crib.

"Good night, Sweet Girl."
